The Letter to Smyrna ~ The Seventh Oracle ~ The Second Death

“The conqueror will suffer no injustice from the second death.”

The seventh oracle is one of the few passages in the entire Apocalypse that the expositors agree upon. The second death spoken of here is almost universally perceived as spiritual death, or the separation of the soul from God. Although the contents of the letter, up to this point, could be construed as negative, this final oracle places the entire matter of suffering tribulation in its true perspective. Although the Christian is suffering a temporary injustice at the hands of the Evil One and his agents, he will suffer “no injustice” as far as his eternal state is concerned. I can think of no more positive note upon which to conclude our commentary on the Smyrnean epistle.
