Revelation 9:12-15

The Release of the Four Angels of the Euphrates Revelation 9:12-15“And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,  Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.  And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.” [Revelation 9:12-15]

In our previous blog we introduced the reader to the First Woe, the flight of the evil locusts, who will torment men for five months.

“And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die; and death shall flee from them.” [Revelation 9:6]

The First Woe will clear the path for the two remaining Woes, the loosing of the Four Angels of the Euphrates, and the final sounding of the remaining Trumpets.

The fact that the language of our text is rendered into highly symbolic terminology should not mislead the reader, for the very “stuff” of the Apocalypse appears daily on the screens of millions of televisions and computers.

At the opening of the Fourth Seal one quarter of the world inhabitants will be destroyed. Based on a population equal to, or greater, than it is today, we are talking about the destruction of over a billion people. And these were only the beginning of the Judgments. Now, at the sounding of the Sixth Trumpet, one-third of the survivors of all that has gone before will perish. In light of this somber fact it matters little whether the plague of the Four Angels last 13 minutes or 13 months.

The fact that John predicts the violent death of such great numbers of people has led many to consider these visions to be far-fetched fantasies, incapable of ever actually happening. I would refer these skeptics to a vast amount of contemporary literature, written for the most part by people who do not claim to be Christian in the Biblical sense, that predict exactly the same thing – the ultimate destruction of the earth’s population.

Our generation, at least those who see the world at the turn of this century, predict a terrible place of crises, starvation, civil unrest, pollution and over-population. The nations are teetering on the brink of nuclear warfare, and over thirty countries have the capacity to exterminate the entire human race. This has created a climate of psychological anxiety that has spread this threatening scenario throughout the world.

The Release of the Four Angels of the Euphrates Revelation 9:12-15Many believe that nuclear war will break out in the Orient, followed by similar incidents in the Middle East, Africa, and South America. At this most unpropitious moment the greenhouse effect will overwhelm the earth. Seas will rise, volcanoes will erupt, earthquakes will abound, and food growing belts will be destroyed. Mass starvation will follow, wars will abound, millions will be deposed, followed by mass extermination, and a plethora of different plagues.

Depressing, of course. But not entirely hopeless. The Fourth Seal is exceedingly optimistic and suggests that humanity will ultimately come to its senses and, perhaps, save itself. This, of course, will seem a trifle far-fetched to those who are familiar with the folly we call human history. The point we wish to make here is that the prophecies of the Apocalypse are not impossible fantasies borne from the mystical experiences of an impractical and overzealous religious enthusiast. On the contrary, the visions John saw so long ago are the very “stuff” that will emblazon the headlines of tomorrows media! They only await the release of the Four Angels of the Euphrates!

“He that hath an ear let him hear!”
